Modern Jewish Mom

Parenting with a Twist of Tradition

I know Valentine's Day is not a Jewish Holiday, but with the recent postings for matchmaking both on this network and on the ModernJewishMom.com website, I thought it would be nice to have a "love" theme for February. I have several articles planned for the website from various columnists, but would love to include stories from readers about how they met their b'sheret. Any chance you all would log on and tell me your stories (and give me permission to re-print them on the website!)

BTW--this was not my idea--someone (ShannasMama perhaps?) posted this question on the MJMForum last year--so thank you!

Oh we are so boring. We met in college (yikes in a bar, double yikes on a Friday night!). I was "cold" so he lent me his jacket and the rest is history. If I never pretended to be cold, he probably wouldn't have asked for my number. He said he was very shy and wasn't sure I was into him until I asked for his jacket. Needless to say I gave him the jacket back 4 years later as a wedding present.
Now 14 + married years and 4 kids I can honestly say faking being cold was the best thing I ever did!!!!!

okay...trying so hard not to make a joke about other things you may have "faked" over the years :)

So cute--funny how we have to help them out so much!

we had an office affair!!!! he was divorced i was single. We had worked together for years without exchanging pleasantries until one day i just asked... "would you like to get a cup of coffee or something someday?"
That "cup of coffee" turned into the talk of the company rumor mill, and the best damn CUP OF COFFEE EVAH!!!!!!!!

I'll add my story. I was dating a non-Jewish guy. My dad (who really let's my mom handle this sort of thing) called me into his office during one visit home and told me to go to the Federation singles event. It was part of a speakers series. The speaker was talking about "Why Jewish Men and Jewish Women Don't Get Along" (how we self perpetuate the negative stereotypes--the whole Jewish men are momma's boys and Jewish women are JAPS kind of thing). I volunteered to help sign people in. Jonathan Jacobs thought I was cuter than the girl signing in people whose last names began with A-K so he went to me (I was L-Z). We started talking and I thought he was cute. At the reception before the speech he stood next to me in the buffet line (they were serving hummus and tabouleh, etc) and said, "If you like food like this, there is a great restaurant on Connecticut Ave." (as if I was looking for a restaurant review!) During the speech, my friend Amy said, "There's your new boyfriend!" I said, "Yeah, right, a "nice Jewish boy"--he'll last three dates and I'll get sick of him!"

At the reception after the speech (coffee and cookies) I made my friends stand far away from me so I would stand alone and he would feel comfortable coming over to talk to me (see how much we help them!?!) He came over and we talked and talked and talked. I really wanted to leave already but he hadn't asked me out yet. Finally I said, "So...when are you taking me to that restaurant you were telling me about?" He said, "uhhhh, how about Saturday."

So Saturday we went to Lebanese Taverna and we've gone out every Saturday night since then for the past 16 years.

(Okay---we don't go out EVERY Saturday night...I just thought that was a nice way to end the story.)

And yes, in our wedding video my parents did an "I told you so" about telling me to go to the Federation event. They waited for the video so it would be forever preserved on film!

I wish! I even waited to reply to this until I could ask my husband if he knows anyone. I'll def. keep my eyes open. You should post something like Sheri did for her brother. Ya never know!

Did you try JDate? Is it good or gross?

Reply to This

My sister is on Jdate and it seems all the guys want one thing. She is fed up. Although she did say she met a nice guy this weekend. Let's see if anything comes of it.

That's why we need to start MJMDate!

Reply to This

We should. This will sound so desparate but I have tried most of the on-line services and the guys that don't want that one thing really aren't ready to date. Now that my daughter is off to college and my son is possibly on his way to AHA it will be me and the dogs! So cliche!!!!
OK so I took my ans off the board from last year... LOL I know I cheated...

I knew my husband in high school, but we were just friends and new some of the same people. We didn't start dating till about 10 years later when a mutual friend fixed us up.

She had been trying to get us together for some time and finally one night we all got together at a bar in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Well he was about 2 hours late getting there and I have to say I was pretty drunk by the time he did. I dont know if it was the alchol or love at first sight, but I knew from the second i saw him that I had met THE one, everything and everyone kinda faded into the background (cheesy I know) We were engaged after 6 mths and married a year after that.

5 years and 2 1/2 kids later, the story is still unfolding! (due w/ds#2 in 6 weeks)
