Parenting with a Twist of Tradition

Ruth Kenner

What should I offer to teach in Adult Ed in Syangogue?

I can teach Hebrew and anything with Israeli Social Studies. Maybe a bit of Jewish Theology. Any suggestions are welcome. If I can' teach them I'll find somebody. We are trying to get Adult Ed off the ground. We had a good year for a first. But I am hoping for a better year.
Any suggestions.

We just wrapped up our Adult Ed program for the year at my shul, so here are some of the topics we covered. You don't say whether your synagogue is affiliated with any movement or not. To level set, mine is not affiliated. We are categorized as "Egalitarian Traditional": we pray using an orthodox siddur, read the full Torah portion each week, and pray a musaf service; but men and women sit together, women get aliyot and read from Torah, and many of our congregants drive to synagogue rather than walk.

Adult Ed programs run about 45 minutes once a week. Each topic is self-contained.

OK - having said that, some of the topics we covered follow. I have syllabus and teaching points for some of these if you want them. The pithy titles are my own. If you don't have a sense of
Mezuzah Madness (what they are, where they go, how high to hang 'em, etc)
Tallit Talk (who, what, when and where to wear)
Shul Etiquette (how to enter, when to talk, what to do, etc)

We also focused on the following prayers and blessing (apologies in advance for poor transliteration)
Birkat Hamazon
Sim Shalom
Ain Keloheinu
Hallel (Passover version, taught as part of our Passover Prep)
Kedusha (the whole sequence, along with choreography)

Hello Leon,
Thank You so much for replying. We are affiliated with this synagogue which is reform and supposably Conservative. Really they are only reform but they have a Saturday Shabbat that is more like Conservative. My family is one of the more traditional families. I moved to America from Israel 6 years ago. I should of picked to live in an area closer to more traditional families. That said I am trying to bring in more Judaism, so maybe there was a reason I find myself here.
If you can send me syllabus and teaching points that would be so helpful, in my goal to teach Judaism.
I am also an Israeli school teacher so all material gives me more time to actually teach. Also I can share with others. There are a lot of talented people that have busy lives that anything that they get can help them be prepared therefore they can find the time to teach and be part of this mission.
My personal email is ruthkenner@me.com Anything you send would be appreciated and used!
Todah and Shabbat Shalom
