Yikes! Warning-- DO NOT look at this site with your kids present, or at work, etc. I just went, and It has been hacked. There is a really horrifying, gross, pornographic pic on the front page of the website. I think I am scarred for life. I need t...

My family has never done more than set aside a cabinet for Passover stuff. This year I did a little more-- I cleaned out the pantry and put the chametz in a big plastic bin in another room. I don't bother making sure things say "kosher for Passove...

Hi Abejita, I bet you could write the book on effective parenting! I have a website www.jewishlearningisfun.com, would it be worthwhile to establish a homeschool outreach on my site for Hebrew/Judaic enrichment for homeschooled children? I have fond memories of my son's 7th grade English teacher, an absolute superb instructor, Jewish, homeschooled, and extremely personable and intelligent. Her parents run the Homeschool support network in the Pgh. region.

Hi, Rachel!
I thought I recognised you, and then I was sure when I read your profile blurb!
Do you remember me from Multiply?
So you've had your baby! I have often thought about you and Mariposa homeschool! I hope you're all doing well!
Did you ever connect with Jody Mace in Charlotte?
It's great to see you!

well, heck no wonder you look glamorous!
Aveda products rock! I haven't yet ventured there for a hair cut/style yet.
I usually get my aveda products off of ebay...WAY WAY cheaper.

Wow, you must have had huge culture shock going from NYC to just NC. Although I was born and raised in The Buckle, I never stop marveling at the strange, funny, and sometimes disturbing brushes with majority culture here. And yes, every time someone comes over to my house to fix something, I, too hear "so what church d'you go to?" as an ice-breaker. Oh, the blank stares when I name my synagogue. .priceless. I'm delighted to meet you, abejita. Your kids are precious. --BibleBeltBalabusta

What kinds of things do you want to talk about?
parenting, homeschooling, knitting, living Jewishly.
About Me:
I'm a feminist stay-at-home mom, and no, that's not an oxymoron. I am passionate about empowered birth, breastfeeding, attachment parenting, and positive discipline. I homeschool my children using the Sonlight curriculum with the Christian stuff left out.

I'm a Reform Jew married to a Catholic-raised atheist. I'm a non-driving, bagel-eating, pizza-folding NYC snob adjusting to a new life in a conservative, car-centric city in the South. I drink red wine and lots of coffee and I don't get enough sleep. I want a bajillion kids. At least four or five. Right now I have three.

I run an online community for liberal, attachment-parenting moms in Charlotte, NC, ViaMaterna. I love NPR, cozy mysteries, knitting, and crosswords. I hate car culture, commercialism, and the fact that there are only 24 hours in each day. I love to read, and was one of those kids who always had her nose stuck in a book. I'm vegetarian. I lean pretty far leftward politically. I am a pacifist. I am sometimes overly confessional in print, yet extremely shy in person.

ECing success

Lately, I've been feeling like a failure at Elimination Communication. I wasn't recognizing any "gotta go!" signs, and I'd had a few days where Luz wasn't peeing in her potty at all. That all changed yesterday. I don't know whether it was a turning point or just a fluke, but it was a pretty damn amazing day.

Yesterday afternoon she was crying for no apparent reason. I felt her diaper and it was dry, so I put her on the potty. She immediately stopped crying and peed. It was as though she'd had t… Continue

My, how I've changed.

I've lived in Charlotte for just over four years, and all this time I've been clutching tightly to my identity as a displaced New Yorker. Lately I've realized, however, that I am becoming more and more of a Charlottean all the time. I am getting used to this place. No one from here would ever mistake me for anything other than a Yankee, but I am becoming, little by little, more Southern and more suburban. It's scary. Here, in no particular order, is a list of ways in which I've changed:

1. I ha… Continue

"How do you do it?"

I’ve been getting that question a lot lately. That and its close sibling, “And you homeschool, too? With a baby?”

People are amazed that I can manage to homeschool with three children, one of whom is not quite five months old. They act like it’s some sort of amazing feat of daring and skill, or at least of remarkable patience and organization.

The truth is, though, that I am neither organized nor especially patient, and that homeschooling while mothering a baby as well as my two big kids is ac… Continue

Ayelet Waldman, get out of my head!

We went to the library yesterday. I wanted to get Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union, but they didn't have it. I wandered around for a bit, made a few more fruitless searches, found a Dorothy Sayers, and then came across… Continue

The Duggars

You might have heard that the Duggars are expecting their eighteenth child. And if you are on a moms' board or you read the comments after news articles, you've probably read lots of criticism about their lifestyle and their choice to have so many kids. I know I have. I've seen assumptions made that they cannot possibly be good parents to that many kids. I've read comments saying "a vagina is not a clown car." I've heard people say that they a… Continue
